There is much to like in this book. It is not shallow for one thing and tackles human dilemmas like wanting to belong yet be independent and the difference between our external actions and our internal thoughts. Sprinkled throughout are tidbits of cowboy and range lore that adds credibility. There does seem, to me at least, some impress of 21rst century mores onto the 19th century such as a more casual approach to sex but at least the act is more implied than stated. Most distressing to me is a weird hodge-podge of theology which is, to me, a hallmark of modern times. There are also typos scattered throughout that are jarring notes which good editing would have fixed.Product details

My husband & I travel a lot in the car. I read aloud as he drives. We alternate what we read. I make him listen to "love stories" & he makes he read Westerns! I can honestly say that we are BOTH loving these books. This is a series read & we have already downloaded all nine into the ! Read & enjoy!
I knew from the first page of Brad Dennison that I was going to like this guy. I'm not going to add any big, long, flowery reviews here, because among all the other great reviews it would get lost. But I think if you like a great traditional Western you are going to really enjoy Dennison's work. On a personal basis, let me tell you that Dennison does his homework, and his heart is deep into the writing of this and any of his other books. Well worth your time.
Well characterized and good description of the flora and fauna. Very enjoyable read making me want to go to the next book right away.
BD has written a novel about a ranching family in the new state or areas that will become the state of Montana. The time frame is approximately 1885. There is law, but its few and far between. The ranchers protect themselves from raiders and Indians. As the family character presents itself we find an ex Texas Ranger at the head of the family with the others close behind. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
I loved this western. It has everything that a remarkable western should have....honorable men, outlaws, strong women, and women who need saving, all set in a time when the wild west was still pretty wild. Great great book. I'm getting the 2nd one now.
This is one of the best Westerns I have read. The adventures of the young cowboy in search of his parents lost to him as a young child the cause of him being orphaned and brought by outlaws. Brad Dennison has brought to us a really fine story of the western way. W.D. Wall
The man is a writer. Say what you will, he is above Louis L'amour, William Johnstone, and his worthless ripoff nephew who is trying to make a living on his uncles name. This is a great novel. He can keep a book flowing without having to fast read any of it.I am half way through this book and never want it to end.Keep writing Mr. Dennison an i will keep reading as fast as i can to get to the next book.
